Sustainable Passive House in the scenic Hudson Valley
Set into a sloping site in the Hudson Valley, the house is composed as a series of interlocking volumes that follow the terrain, minimizing disturbance while framing long views across the landscape. The approach unfolds along a curved drive, revealing a lifted upper volume that bridges over a stone base—creating a sheltered threshold between ground and horizon.
Living spaces extend along the length of the site, opening outward through a sequence of calibrated apertures and terraces. In section, a double-height room draws light deep into the plan and establishes a vertical dialogue between shared and private spaces. Positioned above the entry and garage, the upper volume consolidates the private program—housing the bedrooms and a loft—while the ground level remains porous, allowing views to pass through the house and connect directly to the site.
The house is shaped by Passive House principles: a continuous, highly insulated envelope and precisely oriented glazing balance solar gain, daylight, and thermal performance. Wood, stone, and metal form a restrained material palette that grounds the architecture in its setting. Minimal intervention and native planting allow the site to remain largely intact—an architecture that is both quiet and precise, shaped by climate, light, and land.
